BLUF:
I believe Pi Network is attempting to create a self-sustaining decentralized global ecosystem detached from fiat. Down below I'll explain the progression of my understanding of Pi and how my involvement in their hackathon has influenced my thoughts on the currency.
General Consensus in Cypto Communities:
The general consensus around Pi Network in r/CC has been negative (posts about Pi are banned now). Some of the most convincing arguments of it being a "scam" is the fact that you need an invitation from an existing member, and that your mining rate increases based on the number of successful referrals you make, which benefits early adaptors and active ambassadors of the project. How so many people over-emphasize the fact that the devs are Stanford Ph.D.s doesn't help either.
My Initial Introduction to Pi:
I mine Ethereum for fun on my gaming PC. It's a small amount, but it gives me enough money for snacks every month. One day I came across a YouTube video mentioning Pi and found out that I could mine Pi on my phone and all I had to do was tap a button every 24 hours. Sounds easy enough, why not? and I started mining Pi using my phone.
However, later I learned that Pi doesn't actually "mine" anything and its just a tracker. My best guess is that this is one of their mechanisms to ensure that there are no "bots" farming coins.
Learning More About Pi and What I Liked:
Anonymity in the crypto space is a double edged sword. While we retain our privacy in transactions, because we are anonymous there are a lot of scammers and illegal transactions that have a foothold in countless cryptocurrencies. Pi Network attempts to solve this issue by assigning only ONE account per verified individual. While you are not completely anonymous (because you need to complete a KYCa), our personal information remains anonymous in the eyes of other users in the network. Therefore, your identity is in fact the cumulation of your activities on the blockchain. This helps with Pi Network's aim of building a meritocratic economy, because your identity****b and activities live on Pi's blockchain.
a. KYC is in fact common practice in many Crypto Exchanges (e.g., Binance)
b. Not your real identity but the cumulation of your activities in the ecosystem
Participating in the Pi Hackathon:
After joining the network, I learned about their hackathon with a $100,000 + 100,000 Pi prize pool. Being a developer, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to build something I've been wanting to build and get paid. One of the most important important factors of what make a cryptocurrency valuable is its use case. In the hackathon, there are literally thousands of app proposals that's been submitted and being built. If all of those proposals are built, Pi Network will have thousands of use cases before their mainnet launch. Currently, hackathon submissions have closed and the community rating portion of the hackathon finalists are on its way. Granted these are hackathon projects (we've already seen many examples in this sub) and most, if not all, of them need polishing before they can be used. But they gave me a glimpse of what Pi Network could be; I remain optimistic.
Moving Forward:
At this point, despite its flaws, I'm not worried about Pi being a "scam"; I only worry that it may fail to deliver because its vision is too grand at this time where crypto is not widely accepted. Pi Network's hackathon in the crypto space is neither new nor the largest (e.g., chainlink's hackathon). And there are no doubt many concerns that need to be addressed before Pi Network is taken seriously by the mass (e.g., mainnet launch, KYC). But working in the hackathon has shown me the amount of enthusiasm and conviction the folks developing the "use cases" for Pi have, and it's promising. Pi will have value as long as there are users willing to trade goods or services for Pi, and the hackathon is about building the means to use and earn Pi in exchange for those goods and services. It will be interesting to see how the sentiment in the crypto community develops in the upcoming months and years. Again, all of these are just my thoughts on the project and I'm curious to hear your legitimate concerns and/or comments.
